iOS device stats and iPhone 11 update

Apple just held their 2019 iPhone announcement on Tuesday, September 10. In addition to unveiling the new iPhone 11, the event featured additional new devices, updates on future services, and the announcement of the official iOS 13 release. Today on the blog, we will share the most recent iOS statistics from Apple and a list of exciting updates from the Apple Special Event.

August 2019 iOS Statistics

Based on Apple’s latest update, iOS 12 continues to have high user adoption rates. For devices introduced in the last 4 years, 90% are using iOS 12. In total, 88% of all Apple devices are using iOS 12, meaning only 12% of devices are on iOS 11 or earlier. As usual, iOS users generally upgrade to the most recent version of iOS pretty quickly and the fragmentation of the users on iOS is not as visible as it is with the Android users. This generally makes it easier for testing and making sure testing is covered across iOS devices.

iOS 13 Release

Apple introduced iOS 13 at WWDC in June 2019. After a summer of running its developer and public betas, it was announced that it will be officially released on September 19, 2019. iOS 13 will be available for the iPhone 6S and newer models. This highly anticipated update comes with a variety of new features that will affect device performance. A breakdown of these features can be found on our blog.
We usually recommend our clients to start testing on Beta versions of a new iOS version early enough so once users switch to the most recent version their app will run smoothly.

New iOS Devices

As the follow-up to the iPhone XR, the iPhone 11 is packed with upgrades, primarily on the new dual camera. The new iPhone will feature a more durable finish and a one-hour-longer battery life. Alongside the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max were announced as the successors to the iPhone XS and XS Max. The Pro and Pro Max will feature a triple camera setup and an even better battery life improvement (the iPhone 11 Pro will have up to four hours longer battery life than the iPhone XS, and the Pro Max will have an additional five hours longer than the XS Max).

We recommend testing on older iOS devices as far back as iPhone 6 since a large number of users is still use them.

If your app has any Augmented Reality features, we recommend making sure the app works on older ARKit 2 capable devices as well, such as iPhone SE and iPhone 6S.
