Android: what are the most widespread operating systems?
The monthly stats on Android usage always give interesting data for developers. When testing an Android app, it’s good to know which operating system is the most popular and assure that the app is functioning well on it.
According to the latest statistics released by Android, KitKat, Lollipop 5.1, Marshmallow and Nougat 7.0 are the most used operating systems.
We definitely advise to test your app on those operating systems in addition to the latest ones: Nougat 7.1 and Oreo.
iOS: iOS 11 is now the most used Apple OS
Despite the fact that we are seeing a lower rate of conversion to iOS 11 than when iOS 10 came out, Apple users have still embraced the new operating system pretty quickly. Almost 60% of users are now running iOS 11 on their iPhone. 33% are still using the iOS 10 and only 8% are using earlier versions. The slower rate of conversion might be due to the perception that iOS 11 is primarily for newer iPhones such as the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.
As there are fewer operating systems versions when it comes to Apple devices, we recommend testing your app on earlier versions as much as the latest ones. It’s important to have a large scope of devices and operating systems so you avoid every risk of bugs.
iOS 11 adoption
Testing on the iPhone X should be a priority.
The user experience for the iPhone X is completely different than previous iPhones. There are new gestures and a new screen design. As there are approximately 11.2 million iPhone X sold, it’s definitely a “must test” device.
At PLUS QA, we support testing on iPhone X and on more than 100 iOS devices. Contact us if you want to test your app on them!
