Android and iOS December 2016 Statistics

December Android and iOS statistics have been posted on their respective websites. This information can give you a better idea of how to target your application to devices based on OS versions. This is why each month we explore and analyze trends for you.

Marshmallow Android OS is still the most popular!

As you can see from those figures, Froyo has a negligible number of users; consequently, many applications no longer support it in favor of the newer, more popular OS.
People continue to upgrade their phones each month with the latest compatible version available. Last month, Gingerbread and Lollipop 5.1 both lost users. Those figures follow the trends that we observed during the last few months.
However, month after month, the number of Marshmallow users increases. In December, this version gained 3.3% of users and stayed the most popular OS.

The latest version of Android Nougat, Nougat 7.1, still has a small number of users. Nougat (7.0 and 7.1) gained 0.3% of users, which is insignificant in comparison with Marshmallow OS.
As we said in the previous statistics post, Nougat is not available on every device and in every country. Marshmallow is the latest version available everywhere so it is easier to upgrade.

iOS 10 keeps gaining users!

Regarding Apple iOS, a high percentage of users have upgraded to iOS 10 this month. Indeed, iOS 10 gained 13% of users in one month, which is an impressive rate of adoption. A big part of this growth is due to the fact that many iOS 9 users upgraded to iOS 10. The statistics show that iOS 9 has lost 11% of users this last month.

The fact that Apple doesn’t have many iOS versions available makes the adoption of iOS 10 easier and faster than Android with Nougat.
Moreover, iOS 10 is available on almost all iPhones from iPhone 6 to iPhone 7, in comparison to Android who hasn’t launched Nougat on every device.
