Employee Feature: Meet Katie Heynderickx – Her Evolution From a Tester to a Project Manager

Where are you from?

I hail from just outside of Portland, down the valley a bit. I moved into the city for college and have refused to leave ever since, with the exception of travel of course. I consider myself pretty lucky to have been born and raised in a place that I want to continue to call home for a very long time!

What do you do for fun?

I’ve inherited quite the plant and travel obsessions. Luckily, the two hobbies go hand in hand! Whenever I’m in a different locale, I try my best to visit the local botanical garden, especially when it’s an exotic climate. One of the neatest displays I’ve seen is the orchid house at the Jardim Botanico in Rio de Janeiro. A close second is the dome at the California Academy of Science located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The biodome contains all 4 levels of a rainforest from the forest floor all the way to the canopy! The only difficult part of these experiences is the sad reality of not being able to bring back any exotic plants. However, that has not stopped me from filling a large majority of my apartment with all sorts of greenery.

What do you like about working in QA?

I’m somewhat of a perfectionist so my attention to detail is considered a value, not a neuroticism! I enjoy always working towards bettering a product and ensuring that all of the components meld together just right.

What has your experience at Plus QA been like so far?

Back in 2014, when I began working at Plus QA, it was a very small company comparatively speaking. I was one of a few part-timers who would come in sporadically to work. I like to think, that since then, I’ve grown with the company, moving up from part-time tester to full-time, to a lead, and now, a project manager. My team currently includes 18 people. Along with the personal growth, I’ve been lucky enough to witness the evolution, growth, and success of a company.

I also enjoy the people who I am privileged enough to work with. My close friend referred me to the part-time tester position and though she has since left Plus QA, I have developed great, close friendships with my other co-workers.

What are you most looking forward to in 2017?

I am looking forward to more travels and different challenges in the new year. My partner and I are planning a trip through Vietnam, hopefully in the near future. Maybe this time I’ll be able to smuggle some rare and exotic plants through customs!
