Android and iOS November Stats

The month of December has just begun, so let’s take a look back at Android and iOS November statistics.

While Lollipop and Marshmallow usage rose in October, it looks like they lost some users in November. Indeed, Lollipop 5.0 used to have 11.3% of users while it now has 10.8%.

However, the last version of Lollipop (5.1) gained some users with 23.2% of smartphone users running it.

Regarding Marshmallow, the number of users is still on the rise at 26.3% of the total userbase. People continue to upgrade their phones each month with the latest compatible version available.

Android Nougat is actually the latest version, but like we said last month, it is not available on every device. Only the Pixel phones have this OS pre-installed. And those phones are not available in every country – for now, only the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and Australia are selling the Pixel phones.

However, Nougat is currently running on 0.4% of Android users, which still represents a billion people. Even if the percentage seems to be small, the actual number of users is not insignificant! We hope that, with the launch of Pixel phones in other countries and better access to Android Nougat, next month will be more profitable for the Nougat OS.

Other than that, there are no significant changes from October’s stats.


Regarding Apple iOS

The transition to iOS 10 is faster than for the last Android OS, Nougat. Indeed, iOS 10 is available on all the latest iPhones (iPhones 6 and 7) so it’s more accessible to users.

However, adoption of iOS 10 is not spectacular, with just 3% of users gained in comparison to last month’s data. Indeed, during November, 3% of iOS 9 users upgraded to iOS 10.

Nothing has changed for the earlier iOS, which still serves 8% of users.

The use of iOS is restricted to iPhones and we know that generally, iPhone users are more likely to upgrade phones and OS than Android users. The transition from one iOS version to another is easy and fast, and these trends are reflected in the data. Apple only sells a few distinct  iPhones that are available worldwide.

In comparison, the transition to the latest Android OS, which runs on various devices of different brands, is more complicated and slower. Users do not have the same attachment to one unique brand (like Apple).
