Daydream – Ready to experience VR directly from your phone?

Imagine being able to travel anywhere, visiting any destination in the world, all without ever having to leave your couch thanks to the magic of virtual reality.

VR is now, more than ever, accessible to everyone, especially with the newly launched Google headset, Daydream. (Now available for only $79 in the Google Store).

The headset is specially designed for use with the new Pixel and Pixel XL. For now, only those phones are compatible with the new Daydream headset. However, hopes are high that Google will expand compatibility to other mobile devices in the future.

But before that, let us explain a bit more about Daydream.

Daydream provides the possibility to experience games and videos (and few other things) via VR directly from your Pixel phone. You can now be completely immersed in the 360 degree environment of your favorite game. Instead of just looking at a screen as a spectator, now you can feel like you are truly a part of the action.

There are two different components to Daydream: Daydream View and Daydream app.

Daydream View is the headset that provides you with the VR experience. As for the set up, it is quite simple. You just have to clip your phone into the front of the headset and finely adjust its position to ensure the most comfortable view. Everything is designed to be able to play during several hours.

Glasses-wearers, don’t fret, you have not been forgotten. Daydream View easily accommodates glasses.

The headset also comes with a motion controller that works with a wireless connection to seamlessly track your movement, ensuring that the user feels like an active participant.

The Daydream app allows you to manage all VR compatible apps that you download.

For now, the number of VR compatible apps is relatively small but the possibilities of expansion are great. While this is a good start, some users expressed that they expected more apps to be available to for use on their Daydream View headset.

    • Discover the world!

Some apps allow you to experience a 360 degree immersion of locations all over the globe. While you might be stuck at home in Portland, you can use Google Street View and check out Times Square or the Empire State Building in New York City.

    • Let’s go to the theater!

Experience an outdoor theater, with the stars shining above you and a movie projected right in front of you.

    • Geek out!

What is VR without games? You can download a variety of games like Hunter’s Gate, Fantastic Beasts, Action Bowling or Hekorama, a great puzzle game. Try out the motion controller with WonderGlade.

    • Explore science!

Start to discover the world from a new angle thanks to Star Chart VR. Dive into our galaxy and discover planets all within your headset.

The Daydream View headset is a great starter for anyone who wants to experience VR at home. The price point is great and Google delivers with a quality product. You will be completely immersed in a comfortable headset and a powerful motion controller. For the time being, there are not a ton of apps and you will need to either have a Pixel or another compatible phone. We’re looking forward to the introduction of new apps and hopefully the diversification of compatible phones.
